2019 BYZANTINE NEW YEARS’S CELEBRATION

The festivities for the new Byzantine year, an ancient cultural event which has been taking place for years in Amalfi and Atrani, are fascinating pearls set in the magnificent scenery of the Amalfi coast. This year they take place on August 31st and September 1st.

The Byzantine New Year for over a thousand years was celebrated on the first of September. During Byzantine times this date was in fact considered to be the first day of the new legal and fiscal year.

Amalfi is ready to dive again into one of the oldest and most fascinating medieval traditions. On September 1st, as usual, there will be a beautiful and evocative Historical Revocation Procession with the participation of more than 100 people in period costumes. The procession will end with the swearing-in ceremony of the Magister of Civiltà Amalfitana with a medieval ritual inspired by the coronation of the Dukes of Amalfi.

Year after year, the event’s most important moment is successfully revived each year without altering the ancient tradition. Revolving around the naming of the Magister, the title is bestowed upon a prominent individual from Amalfi (a local or by adoption) who, over the years, has made a name for himself in an area such as art, science or politics, while bringing forth the city’ s name. He will be unveiled only during the event.

The Antica Repubblica Marinara, together with the characteristic village of Atrani, is once again the backdrop for this extraordinary and must-see historical event. Inspired by the former political grandeur of Roman civilizations, the event offers a full program of important cultural events.

An event you can”t possibly miss during your getaway at the Laqua Charme & Boutique.
